Tim Tebow’s Voodoo Doll, and Tebow Time Hysteria

By Adam Riggs

I am trying to consider Tebow as a good NFL quarterback, I really am.  I mean it is a great story that makes you want to say “Rudy, Rudy, Rudy.”  The guy plays with heart, fire and passion that is almost infectious, but ultimately he is a bad quarterback that had a nice run of seven wins in eight games, followed by three terrible losses.   In the games he won it was like a series of fortunate events.  I even wondered if Tebow had a little voodoo doll that he had for good opposing players.

In the seven games that he won, every game was within one possession.  It is almost unheard of to win that many close games in that span of time.  Don’t believe me go ask the Cowboy’s defense of the last two years how easy it is to win close games.  Examine for a minute the games and you can get a better idea of why the Broncos really won.

Miami 18-15
Tebow 13-27 161 Yards 59 Rushing
Miami at the beginning of the fourth quarter scores a touchdown and with 12 point lead decides to go for two, but was unsuccessful.   Sparano is was fired and is easy to see why.
Denver successfully recovers an onside kick.

Oakland 38-24
Tebow 10-21 124 Yards 118 Rushing
Defense has three interceptions
Eddie Royal punt return TD
McGahee has a 60 yard TD run, and 163 yards total for the game.

Chief  17-10
Tebow 2-8 69 Yards 43 Rushing (Fifth time since 1980 a QB wins while only completing 2 passes)
He completed just 2 passes one a 56 yarder to Decker for a TD

Jets 17-13
Tebow 9-20 104 Yards 68 Rushing
Defensive TD
Nick Folk missed FG

Chargers 16-13
Tebow 9-18 143 Yard 67 Rushing
Novak late missed FG (made same distance earlier in game)
McGahee 24 yard TD run
Three Prater FGs made with less than 1:00 left in third to game winner in overtime
Vickings 35-32
Tebow 10-15 202 Yards 13 Rushing
Defensive TD
Interception with about 1:00 to go brought back to Min 15 for GW FG
Two Prater FG less than 2:00

Bears 13-10
Tebow 21-40 236 Yards 49 Rushing
Two Prater FG of > 50 yard (59,51)
59 Yarder with three second left in regulation
OT Fumble Recovery by Duberville (fumble recovered in FG range)

The world has been swept into Tebow time hysteria, but there have been several critical plays that aided the win.  Tim Tebow was just a mere benefactor.  Tim Tebow is three defensive/special teams touchdowns, a key fumble recovery, an onside kick, and key interception away from losing four of those games.  Also it is evident that Tebow needs to give part of his check to Matt Prater for not missing anything late in games.

Tebow has also been a benefactor of his voodoo injury doll as well.  In almost all of these games each team has been without its best player or multiple impact players.   The players that he missed seeing because of injury were Jason Campbell, Darren McFadden, Malcolm Floyd, Adrian Peterson, Matt Forte, and Jay Cutler.   These teams are remarkably better when these players play.

In the games that he has won this year has only completed a dismal 49% of his passes while not throwing for more than 236 in any game he has played in.  He also threw for less than 100 yards in two games, both against the Chiefs.  He lost to Kyle Orton whom he replaced, and has lost each of the last three games.
Tebow is in the playoffs and will face the Steelers who have the ability to make life miserable for any QB in the NFL so times will get continue to get tougher for Tebow.  Especially with all the film on him and teams learning not to bite on gimmick plays specifically designed for him.  He will have to complete better than 47% of his career mark passing percentage against the Steelers or he may find himself out of more than just the playoffs.  He could find himself out of the league.
